March 31st, today, a rainy and, literally, dark day in Salvador, is a date to be put behind us forever. Outrageously, the Brazilian military forces called their coup a revolution, and many generations like mine, for example, grew up being indoctrinated that we were living the times of a legitimate movement. Flat bloody lie as Brits would say! Those were dark days and many people and their families, especially those directly involved in the underground fights against the regime, know what they went through. Torture, assassination, no voice, no rights, just darkness. 20 year of darkness which produced wounds that certainly will take generations to heal. I was just a baby, but I do remember my early childhood days in the interior where we barely knew what was going on in big cities like São Paulo and Rio. There was no TV in our house. The radio was also a luxury and censors would never allow the real truth to reach our ears and our minds. They were pretty good at muffling the population's cries. And to disguise their crimes, like Marie Antoniete in France, they gave us, not bread and circus, but football. Those were the times of Garrincha and Pelé, the two most fantastic Brazilian geniuses of the ball ever. And we proudly rooted for them. The military believed we were rooting for them. We were not. Those were dark days. Today, 44 years later, the only thing we would like to revere is the memories of those who perished because of their ideals of a free Brazil, a free country to all of us. They were the real revolutionaries! So, let's leave this date to History. If possible!segunda-feira, 31 de março de 2008
44 years ago darkness set in in our country...

To the Peter Pan of my life
Seven years ago, precisely, God gave me my Peter Pan. March 29th, the day our beloved city of Salvador reaches 459 years of foundation, my lovely Pedro gets to his 7th year of age. Can a father in this entire world be happier than I am? I doubt it! Pedro is my joy, my lighthouse, my little love, the living proof that makes me feel survived throughout this and, hopefully, many other lives to come. Pedro is my anchor, my harbor, my ocean. Seven years of age. How precious. But he's growing too fast, I think. I miss his baby days already. His first tooth, and now he's losing an entire bunch of them. Big teeth are coming in. My Peter Pan is leaving time behind. This is no good. I tell him: Why don't you stop growing, Pedro Pan? It's so lovely to be a child. Ah, dearest son, your imagination makes me fly with you! What's gonna happen when you come of age? Who's going to tell me all about Ben 10, Pokemon, Bob Sponge and the zillion Cartoon Network's characters? Oh, Pedro, be always my Peter Pan, no matter how tall you become, will ya? This father here has so many things to say, so much love to dedicate, so much... that it gets complicated to put that in words. My Peter Pan is now seven years old. On this day, his family is happier than ever. And we all wish Pedro seven times seven times many seven years forever and ever!

Ah, as mulheres! Ah, as mulheres! É dia delas. Pronto.
My city, literally, underwater
This is what we call a downpour with an attitude! It's unbelievable and frustrating to realize how unprepared we are for the raining season in this incredible city of São Salvador da Bahia. Last night the whole sky came down on us. It rained so much in three hours that the entire city came to a huge standstill. Nothing moved. Water all over and a lot of problems, especially landslides in the poor areas. But as disasters here tend to be democratic in one sense, the rich 'bairros' also got to be engulfed by the muddy river Salvador was transformed into due to the bad storm. Yes, this is our city. Our summer city. The city that beautifully welcomes lots of tourists and bluntly penalizes its inhabitants. I was home safe and sound at about the time the storm began, but I couldn't stop thinking about the slum dwellers and people who live in the poor neighborhoods as, ironically, they are the ones who have little or nothing, and when a tragedy like this strikes, they end up losing everything over and over, year after year. It's a shame, and the worst part of this story is that this has become routine. It's the very same thing every time summer says goodbye. Our three-hour 'Katrina' last night was just a sample of what the 'waters of March' may be bringing in in the near future. It was the announcement of what is right on the way. The consequences can be tragic. They were last night. They were. They could've been avoided. They could've. We didn't. We haven't. Shame on us. All of us!sábado, 23 de fevereiro de 2008
